South Africa Equity Markets | 05 Oct 2015: JSE All Share ended 2.19% higher with gains across the board

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa — Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index ended 21.9 percent or 1,115.42 points higher to close at 52,071.31 points. The JSE Top 40 index also added 1,024.91 points or 2.24 percent to end at 46,693.26 points.

The JSE financial sector index surged by 2.06 percent to end at 44,366.64 points. Both Industrial and industrial 25 sector indexes higher by 2.25 percent to close at 77,533.35 points and added 2.33 percent to settle at 69,731.44 points respectively. The resource index surged by 2.08 percent or 677.29 points to close at 33,302.59 points and the Gold mining sector index advanced by 2.49 percent or 24.53 points with a closing level of 1,010.69 points.

Looking at the market strength/breath (measured as ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 252 price gainers, 122 price losers and 63 remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe closed positive.  Out of the top gainers was LONMIN PLC, whose shares rose by 19.45 percent to close at ZAR 4.79 after investors exchanged 3,677,825 shares. Glencore Xstrata Plc surged by 16.05 percent after traded 14,194,267 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 22.78. Aquarius Platinum Limited also jumped by 11.11 percent to end at ZAR 1.70 after investors traded 2,976,591 shares. Goliath Gold Mining Limited advanced by 10.00 percent to end at ZAR 1.10 after exchanged a total of 9,000 shares. Sibanye Gold Limited climbed by 7.88 percent to end at ZAR 17.93 after trading 1,703,607 shares.

On the losers’ table was, Eastern Platinum Limited whose shares declined to ZAR 11.25 after 3,000 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a fall of 12.79 percent. Basil Read Holdings Limited tumbled by 9.91 percent to close at ZAR 4.00, after 12,700 shares were traded. Wescoal Holdings Limited plummeted by 8.78 percent to trade at ZAR 1.35 a share after investors bought and sold 208,946 shares. Cognition Holdings Limited slumped by 7.37 percent to trade at ZAR 1.76 after 57,176 traded deals. After investors bought and sold 64,228 shares, Trustco Group Holdings Limited sagged by 6.82 percent to trade at ZAR 4.10.

On the currency markets front, the South rand was stronger against US dollar at ZAR 13.6238 by adding 0.71 percent and against British pound to trade at ZAR 20.6203 after gaining 0.92 percent. The rand appreciated by 1.03 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.2362.
